I see a lot of people on Twitter and Facebook looking for advice because they dropped their cell into water – rain, toilet, mud puddle, pool, beer, etc. There’s still a chance you can save your device.
1. Immediately remove the battery. DO NOT turn the phone back on to see if it still works.
2. Remove the SIM card and any cases or covers you have on the phone.
3. If the phone still has water sloshing around in it, use a can of compressed air or a vacuum cleaner to get the excess water out – DO NOT use a blowdryer or any other heat source. Also, strange as it seems, if you dropped your phone in salt water, you should probably flush the phone with tap water because when salt water dries, the salt leaves a residue that can ruin the device.
4. Submerge the phone and the separated battery into a bowl of uncooked rice. Leave it in the rice for a day – the grains of rice will wick the water out of the device, leaving it nice & dry.
The key is to act as quickly as possible once the phone gets wet. The faster you get the phone into the rice, the better your chances will be that it will work once it’s dry.
